Coronavirus: 10 Movies About Pandemics and Other ‘Apocalypses’

The Covid-19 quarantine increases interest in movies and miniseries about viruses, epidemics, and pandemics with striking coronavirus-like appearances.

1 – The Hot Zone

The Hot Zone is an American drama miniseries, which premiered on May 27, 2019 in National Geographic and traces the origins of the Ebola virus, which is highly infectious and deadly from the Central African rain forest and its first arrival in the U.S. In 1989, when the virus suddenly appeared in primates in a scientific laboratory in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., no cure was known. A heroic United States Army veterinarian working with a secret military SWAT team put herself in mortal danger when she tried to prevent the outbreak before it spread to the human population.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bryan Cranston, the feature film chronicles the spread of a disease that suddenly arises. It all starts with an American woman (Paltrow) becoming infected when visiting a casino in Hong Kong, and the virus spreads rapidly. The epidemic reaches all corners of the world, killing a large part of the population. Health authorities are fighting to contain the disease. To try to find a vaccine, a WHO doctor embarks on a journey to follow in the footsteps of the first woman who became infected with the virus.

Twelve Monkeys is a science fiction film directed by Terry Gilliam, inspired by Chris Marker’s movie La Jetée (1962), and starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt and Christopher Plummer. The plot describes the story of a prisoner named James Cole (Bruce Willis) who, in a post-apocalyptic world, volunteers to do a scientific experiment that aims to travel to the past to find out what caused the situation in which he lives in the future, in which the Earth’s surface was contaminated with a virus so powerful that it forced the surviving population to live underground.
